This blog will typically be about unusual architectural elements, or homes that evoke inspiration with an interesting story or history. But as we all know, homes are a reflection of the dweller, and sometimes the individual radiates a vibrancy that causes us to stop and reflect beyond the brick and mortar - to be grateful and mindful of how we are spending our moments and not get so caught up in the busyness of our lives.
I immediately knew, when my client opened the door, that I was going to like her. She was quick and sure of herself, sassy, short hair, warm and engaging. Within moments we had moved from surface introductions to the questions I typically ask for my initial consult. How long have you lived here? Are you wanting these renovations for your enjoyment or are you planning on selling? What are your favorite spaces? Why? How do you typically use these areas?... I sensed she had a strong need to live life to the full and needed her home to reflect that. And it became clear why... "You see, I just had brain surgery two months ago" she said as she brushed her hair to the side to show me the scars. She traced her fingers down her neck to where a device had been implanted into her chest. She spoke with an air of gratitude and purpose.
After the initial interview, she walked me through her home taking me to her favorite room. It is located in the back corner surrounded by windows with light streaming in. As we entered I saw a beautifully crafted shadow box displaying an army uniform from WW2 with a purple heart. She explained her father-in-law's involvement in the war, then her mother-in-law's naval service remembered by a framed flag hanging next to it. As I turned I saw an immaculate work space, sewing and serge machines, and brightly colored threads. She opened the closet and pulled out a sports themed blanket with the softest chenille backing. "I make these for the children at the women's shelter." she said quietly as she pulled out another with a nature theme. Does she have any idea what these mean to those children - to own something so comforting when they've been through a trauma no child should ever have to face? I think she does. And in the midst of a busy, check-the-box workday I have been reminded to live with purpose and passion and beyond myself.
Maybe you've noticed her dwelling? It's the one on two acres just outside the city. The one with the bright light emanating from within.
