Does the first glance into your home reveal your personality and story? Is there a touch of whimsy or any unexpected elements? One of my jobs as a designer is to bring my clients as close to the edge as they're comfortable with so they don't grow bored with their home. Another goal is for that space to truly reflect who they are. Below are some simple ways to add impact as you tell your own story:

◊ Think big when it comes to lighting, artwork, mirrors, or furniture. Scale is key and can make smaller spaces seem more expansive. Consider using more vertical wall space than is typical for art pieces, and don't be afraid of color or texture.

◊ Add some personal touches in an unexpected way. Do you have a favorite photo of a vacation spot that could be printed on metal? Could a piece of pottery be framed in a large shadow box or an antique rug used as wall art?

◊ Declutter and organize - A tidy space can help you to feel more relaxed and content. You should be able to see most of your baseboards. Anything utilitarian can be hidden or made to blend well with the surroundings ie. cords, switch plates, vents, etc.

◊ You can range from serene to dramatic depending on side chairs, art, rugs, blankets, and pillows. Larger pieces of furniture in neutral tones gives you a blank palette to work with.

◊ Plants not only bring the outdoors inside, but also add more height. An LED up-light placed inside the pot creates interesting shadow patterns on the walls and ceiling.

◊ Lighting can make or break a room, so be sure to choose fixtures that are both stylish and functional. Again, think big and don't be afraid to try something new. Table lamps add interest and height and floor lamps chase shadows from dark corners. Stay with soft white bulbs and choose lamp shades that add interest like black with a reflective interior.
